Zorro's Story
Discovered helpless and alone by the roadside at the edge of a plantation in the Kinabatangan area, Zorro was a tiny, vulnerable baby aged just 3 months old when he was rescued and taken to Sepilok.
When he first arrived he was very scared. A thorough health examination confirmed his good health. Zorro, named after a cartoon character in the popular series 'One Piece', completed his quarantine and was gradually introduced to the other orangutans at the nursery. He developed a close friendship with Luffy, another young male orangutan, and was described by the care team as a playful, vibrant and independent orangutan.
It was with great pride that we introduced Zorro onto the adoption scheme, and a privilege to share his story and progress with our supporters. There was always something to say about him and his cheeky, mischievous nature. From pinching other orangutans' food, to peeling fruit and wearing the rind as a hat, he was full of character.
It was an extremely sad and upsetting day that we received news from the Director of Sabah Wildlife Department, Mr Augustine Tuuga. Zorro had become very unwell and was taken to the clinic at Sepilok for treatment where he was found to be suffering from a gastrointestinal disease. Despite the best efforts of the veterinary team, Zorro’s health continued to decline and he sadly passed away in 2023.
The team at Sepilok gave Zorro a second chance and made it possible for him to enjoy a new life at Sepilok for the four years that he was there.
"Zorro was an incredible ambassador for our conservation efforts and held a special place in everyone’s hearts."
