In a significant and symbolic gesture of support for wildlife conservation, His Majesty The King and Her Majesty the Queen of Malaysia visited Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre on 5th September 2023.
Their visit highlights the importance of preserving the critically endangered orangutan and is a testament to the invaluable work carried out by the Centre.
Sepilok has been at the forefront of orangutan conservation efforts for nearly 60 years. Orangutans, one of the world’s most endangered species, face numerous threats, primarily due to habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade.
The Centre has worked tirelessly to rehabilitate and release orphaned and displaced orangutans back into their natural habitats.
Mr Augustine Tuuga, Director of Sabah Wildlife Department, welcomed the royal party and briefed them on the work being carried out at there.
Also present were Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya and Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup. The group were able to observe the orangutans at the indoor nursery and learn more about the rehabilitation programme.
The visit was a momentous occasion for orangutan conservation, drawing both national and international attention to the plight of the orangutan and the need to protect their habitat.
