New rescue vehicles
We are pleased to announce that thanks to the help and generosity of our supporters, Orangutan Appeal UK funded three new, fully modified rescue vehicles for The Sabah Wildlife Rescue Unit which were given by our Founder, Susan Sheward MBE in a ceremony with YB Datuk Christina Liew, Deputy Chief Minister/Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa in Kota Kinabalu.
Also present were Tuan William Baya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Environment Sabah and Augustine Tuuga, Director of Sabah Wildlife Department, and many prominent local people.
Established in 2010, in response to the increasing need to rescue and translocate injured or displaced animals in Sabah, the Wildlife Rescue Unit play a vital role in saving the critically endangered orangutan and the Bornean pygmy elephant. The WRU have grown to be highly successful and have extended their activities to include sun bears, pangolins and much more.
These animals often face human-wildlife conflicts when they stray into plantations and villages and having a reliable way of transferring them to a safer location or for medical treatment is essential to guarantee the survival of wild populations.
Having three new rescue vehicles will help the WRU rangers on their vital rescue and relocation missions, where they have to take on the tough terrain and need to have reliable vehicles that won’t leave them stranded in the middle of the rainforest.
Augustine Tuuga, Director of the Sabah Wildlife Department told Orangutan Appeal UK, “we greatly appreciate your gift of the three new wildlife rescue vehicles, which will definitely be used to the fullest by WRU in all their important rescue work around Sabah. ”
Orangutan Appeal UK are committed to working with The Sabah Wildlife Rescue Unit, and send a heartfelt thank you to all of our supporters worldwide who have made this possible.
