Borneo visit
Adrienne (OAUK Manager) and Jacha (Chairperson) recently returned from a trip to Borneo where they met with various individuals, including Mr Augustine Tuuga - Director of Sabah Wildlife Department, Benoit Goossens and Milena Salgado Lynn of Regrow Borneo and Danau Girang Field Centre, and Sylvia Alsisto - Officer in Charge Kinabatangan, who are all working towards the common goal of orangutan conservation.
Meeting with Government Minister
They were honoured to be granted a meeting with Datuk Christina Liew, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment for Sabah, Malaysia, who expressed her support for the conservation efforts being carried out by Orangutan Appeal UK.
Adrienne and Jacha also visited Vision School, a local school that had fundraised for the charity.
Sepilok
When at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, they attended training sessions of the orangutans at indoor and outdoor nursery and watched the progress the young orangutans have made in their rehabilitation. Adrienne comments that one of the new arrivals Agop, has made "fantastic progress" in her climbing abilities.
They caught up with Head Vet Dr Nabila and our own vet Dr Yohind to hear more about continued efforts at the centre, funding needs, and ongoing projects including improvements to the indoor and outdoor nurseries.
Adrienne said: "I feel incredibly grateful to be able to witness the tireless efforts of our team on the ground in Borneo, and to see first-hand the positive impact our conservation projects are having on the critically endangered orangutans. It's clear that there's still much work to be done, but I remain optimistic that with continued collaboration and support, we can create a sustainable future for these incredible apes."
