A year in review: 2024
2024 was a busy and productive year made possible by our incredible supporters, volunteers and dedicated staff. Here are some of our highlights from the year.
Our Sepilok team rescued a young, orphaned, male orangutan who has since joined the rehabilitation programme and is thriving. We also purchased a new vehicle which was instrumental in this rescue and will continue to support reintroductions, wild orangutan monitoring and education and outreach activities.
We employed a new ranger to assist with the rehabilitation programme bringing our total number of Sepilok care staff to 12. We invested in enclosure refurbishments, medical supplies and equipment, habitat restoration, awareness campaigns and various enrichment for the orangutans. This includes 100 fig trees that have been planted around Sepilok which will also offer a reliable food source for generations to come.
We conducted a successful orangutan reintroduction back into the wild for rehabilitated orangutan, Mubali. After nine months of dedicated care and rehabilitation at Sepilok, he was ready to return to the wild. Mubali was closely tracked and monitored to ensure he was ready to embrace his independent life.
Our team continued their collaboration with the Japan Orangutan Research Centre (JORC) in Danum Valley, participating in a knowledge exchange programme, where they built on their food identification and orangutan tracking skills.
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of our charity - a significant milestone that reflects the incredible generosity of our supporters. Thank you for being part of our journey.
